Tigers of the Market/The Gate

The nowadays already liquidated spaces are in the centre of our disquisitions - the Chinese Market of Budapest- which according to the not beleaguered agreement of the present economic system, represents the out of date ways of consumerism.
Our first idea was, that we change the Józsefváros Chinese Market's nearly completely ruined iron/enamel tigers for new ones, as a gift. But during the realization we had to face, that the liquiditation of the Chinese Market had gone so far, that one part of market behind the gate was closed. The open air market had to move to the surrounding market halls. By replying to this complex phenomenon the reconstruction of the market's iron gate appeared in the gallery space of the SYAA( Studio of Young Artist Association, Budapest) and around it the mythical tigers were visible. The tigers, which lost their original function, and which are like properly ruined object trouvé, became the central elements of that exhibition. As the appropriation of the market hall's shape, an installation made from foil and cardboard-boxes were visible in the gallery-space. An other important element of the aesthetic of the market was the container city, which was created with more than hundreds of coloured and miniatured range of objects. In the exhibition space there was a functioning, rolling Chinese cooking stand made by found materials.

For the exhibition we would like to present the 1:1 scaled gate with the original tigers. In the gallery space we would like build up the gate from flexible black rubber string as you can see on the photo above.

Short documentation of the exhibition in the SYAA:
