Marta Czene - Sinking (Roman Polanski: Repulsion)
Hungary

2011, acryl and oil on fiberboard, 100 x 155 cm

Description:
The painting consists of six scenes on a single board and it makes part of my research about narration. It was made under the affect of Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. Perhaps this movie in itself is not particularly interesting, but there are some scenes that tell me more than what is strictly needed for the story telling. I see things in it that are someway parallel with my own thoughts and feelings, they are more about me than the movie. From these scenes I chose photos, which I’ve put in a new context. I’ve set them up again, redesigned them, and I’ve made my own version. I chose this method because taking over some typical solutions of storytelling might bring us closer to inspire the viewer to make a new story of his own. The painting is a ready made narration of a movie, replaced by my own private, personal, real or imagined stories. The story is thus created from a ready-made narration I’ve filtered through my feelings and thoughts, mixed with my own story, and the story of the girl I have painted, and who is a good friend of mine. This is a psychological roleplaying game of an alternative life’s situations.
I want the viewer to use the storyboard-like sequences of my painting as a starting point, and fill it with his or her own related thoughts, just as I used Roman Polanski’s film.
