Rose Masterpol was born in New York and currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received a B.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts. She has been exhibiting regularly throughout California and the American (and Mexican) west since the 1990s, including one-person shows in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Since her student days Masterpol has embraced a demanding, emphatically expressive approach to non-objective painting. She employs the power of gesture, color and line, allowing images to emerge and reveal themselves. Through a process of free association, Masterpol unravels what can be called an abstract portrait of the moment, full of unexpected juxtaposition. She builds and layers her painting, laying the groundwork, superimposing a framework, and ultimately realizing a depth of field. This structure provides a hierarchy of form at the same time as it maintains a dream-like quality.
