Excavation Under Construction

Maream Merza - United Kingdom

In a world that is slowly dissipating to the contemporary consequences of our inhumane actions to this planet, we remain further blindsided to the issues presented to us, even if we are at a stage in time where technological advancements have made us more interconnected than ever before.
Cultures and traditions become insignificant by the day as people succumb to the city's offerings that further itself away from the architectural vision but to the mass production of 'modern' inspired buildings that lack the sophistication in translating materials honestly and fail to attach themselves to a new tradition.
This model harnesses the concept of reviving the traditional style of design whilst adopting contemporary methods to allow the creation of buildings that remain timeless and everchanging.
The model: a central brick taken from Portland Square, a Grade I Listed heritage site in Bristol, dating back to the 1800s, is surrounded by different methods of construction one could approach; one is attaching the newly designed bricks directly onto the existing one to create direct continuity, the second method looks at creating a double wall with the newly designed bricks in avoidance of creating direct contact with the existing design as a sign of respect, and final approach is the use of delicate scaffolding on the brick and allowing the possibilities of framed structures to be the solution of less violent approaches to heritage design.

The scale of the brick in comparison to the scale of the people building it, is meant as a metaphor to symbolise the brick as a heritage building in its essence and the construction taking place around it being the way at which a building is treated.

Architecture dies when the building stops in time, so in order for the ruin to become a monument and outlive future generations, this architecture embraces societal change and reimagines a world where transcendence and continuity are key to honest translation.
