The Farce

Ruoyu Gong - China

I derive inspiration from Caravaggio’s work “Judith Beheading Holofernes”, and delineate a theatrical scene inspired by traditional Chinese comedy. The Farce combines the Western medium of oil painting with Chinese cultural symbols, reflecting my contemplation on personal relationship with foreign visual rhetoric. The meticulous painting process allows me to critically introspect the indoctrination of the Western artistic canon while prolonging my engagement with Chinese cultural heritage.
