These are a set of slip casting series that I worked on with every day and mundane objects. The idea was to examine per se what makes a “spray bottle” a “spray bottle”. Over time, people seem to have developed a semi-universal understanding of what a specific object is supposed to visually “look-like”. The visual language that an object holds was often originated from its functionality. By taking objects with very clear functionalities and casting them in clay, I took away their functionalities, yet kept the visual language that we identify them by intact. People can easily identify what these objects are supposed to represent by their physical presence. However, are these objects still the objects that we claim to know? This was the question I that I wanted to examine and expand upon. There are certain visual cues that quickly drive us to particular conclusions. I wish to question these conclusions that we arrive at and ask what it is that we are truly perceiving through this set of ceramic objects.
