As the Sky Holds Its Breath

Young Kwon - Korea (south)

This work presents a charged seascape suspended in a tense stillness before the storm. A luminous horizon cuts through the dark mass of gathering clouds, while vivid passages of crimson, blue, and gold heighten the sense of expectancy and pressure. The composition does not necessarily try to focus on only the storm itself, but on the emotional and visual intensity of what precedes it. Broad, expressive forms within the sky suggest instability and motion, while the land and water below remain fluid and unsettled, as if responding to an unseen force. Through this heightened treatment of light and color, the painting explores themes of anticipation, volatility, and fragile calm, which exists just before rupture.
