Tempus capsulae V

Roger Sanguino - Spain

My current body of work explores the human condition through two primary lines of enquiry: one focused on the physicality of the body, and the other on the concept of the portrait. Within these, I examine themes such as identity, urban space, interpersonal relationships, geometry, and time.My exploration of portraiture is structured across three thematic axes. Among these is Retrato resguardado (Sheltered Portrait), conceived during the period of global confinement. In this work, the subject appears partially or entirely enveloped in a steel mesh - a visual reflection of the involuntary isolation to which we were subjected. The work "Tempus. Capsulae V" I am submitting to the YICCA International Contest of Contemporary Art (2026) is a kinetic portrait designed to be suspended from the ceiling, rotating on its own axis via a small motor. The structure features two representations of the same subject: two oil portraits covered by stainless steel mesh, affixed back-to-back and gazing in opposite directions. This composition echoes the Roman deity Janus, often depicted in classical sculpture with two faces - one looking toward the past and the other toward the future. In this dual representation, I find a profound parallel with our own experience: the way we constantly gaze from the present toward what has been and what is yet to come
