Home in Motion

Hock Chuan Ler - Singapore

Home in Motion explores the idea of home as a living, evolving space shaped by time, memory, movement, and human presence. Inspired by Singapore’s changing urban landscape, the painting brings together fragments of old architecture, colourful facades, overlapping structures, and traces of everyday life. Rather than presenting the city as a fixed architectural record, the artist deliberately fragments and rearranges its forms, allowing recognisable buildings to dissolve into an expressive composition. The soft pink surrounding the central structures creates a dreamlike atmosphere, suggesting memory and emotional attachment, while the contrasting reds, yellows, blues, and pale tones create rhythm, energy, and visual movement. Loose lines, scraped surfaces, layered paint, and areas of unfinished space reveal the process of looking, remembering, and reconstructing. The title Home in Motion reflects the changing nature of both the city and our relationship with it. Buildings may disappear, streets may transform, and familiar places may become unrecognisable, yet their emotional traces remain. The work is therefore not simply a portrait of a place, but a reflection on belonging, impermanence, and the continuing movement of home through time.
