Potentia

Marc Scully - Ireland

Potentia is the third work in a collection of work called ‘De Ledrede’. It maps the arc of Bishop Richard de Ledrede’s spiritual and political struggle during the prosecution of Alice Kyteler.

Scene One evokes chaos and foreboding — granulated crow sounds, dead-leaf textures, abrasive FM gestures, and larval imagery overlaying Kilkenny townsfolk suggest a diocese in decay.

Scene Two stages de Ledrede’s ecclesiastical response: quill scratches, seven deep bell tolls (one per charge), and a male voice intoning accusations, overlaid with a stained-glass crown morphing into a symbol of divine authority.

Scene Three reimagines de Ledrede’s hymn Peperit Virgo as playful harp and voice interplay before a stained-glass diamond backdrop with flowing Latin text — soft power consolidating into ritual.

The third work in the portfolio follows the antagonist from reactive fear (Viso Nocturna) to active institutional agency. The seven bell tolls correspond directly to the seven charges levelled against Alice Kyteler, grounding the abstract sonic narrative in historical record.
