I shot the "One Through Another" project over the course of a calendar year, during which I made my closeness with another person the subject matter of my work.
Two years ago, my subject, Anya, and I didn't know each other. Now I can't quite put into words exactly what we've become to each other. Project grew out of our relationship.
It all began when I picked up my first film camera and Anya, a musician, was going through a difficult breakup. I started taking photos of her. Anya has a complicated relationship with her body and reflection, and with each shoot, she became more vulnerable in front of the camera while the staging became increasingly theatrical. This subjective perspective influenced the dynamics of our work, and I realized that I needed to remove her body from the frame while preserving her radiance, sensitivity, strength and vulnerability.
This photo is a single photo from the series, which reflects real Anya the most.
