Gongsan Kim was born in Seoul in 1957 and immigrated to America in 1997. She has a BFA from Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington D.C. She is a member of Soho20Gallery in New York since 2012. 

Kim uses the method of burning to express her sorrow over her divided homeland and to honor the innocent lives lost in North Korea. Her work was selected in Arte Laguna Prize in Venice, Italy, Florence Biennale in Italy, Gallery Korea in New York and Ann Arundel College Juried show.  She was awarded Gold prize in BWAC gallery in New York and  special award from Passion of Freedom in England. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Virginia and Korean Embassy in Washington DC and Seoul, Korea.  She is also had a number of group exhibitions. Her work was viewed by Washington Post, Blown Artinfo, Radio Free Asia, Nwesis, Ukorea, Korea Times, Korea Daily News and magazine New Korea. Her works are collected in YWAM in Seattle, The Great Vision School in Korea, Justice for N.Korea, and NKinUSA.
