Sculptor / Poet

I’m a South African, Durban based sculptor. I studied at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) - currently I am enrolled in a master’s program (MFA). I have previously engaged in a number of industry apprenticeships which have greatly contributed to my technical and conceptual training. My creative production involves sculpture, drawing and poetry and my themes and language explore; identity (place and people in South Africa), memory, history, dreams, power, gender, the environment and materials as metaphors. My sculptural works have been involved in a few group exhibitions across the country since graduating.

I love that I live in paradise, with a completely loaded and complex history, present and potential future. We are shifting and adapting all the time. My creativity is a gift that I cherish and I am completely empowered by making. I find so much beauty in things that are made with tenderness and consideration, and so, I try to make beautiful things, from all kinds of materials, that speak to me about where I come from, about history, human complexity and imagination. I find the use of poetry in my creative process helps to contextualise and reflect on the making. I use sculpture as a medium to engage the physical world; to create cultural ‘documents’ that communicate who I am and where I find myself, they become the lens through which the world is made visible and tangible.
