Burden of Innocence

Dariusz Mierzwa - Poland

This work presents a solitary figure moving through a devastated landscape, carrying both physical and symbolic weight. The cross on his back suggests endurance and sacrifice, while the surrounding presence of armed figures introduces the tension of contemporary conflict.

A small abandoned toy placed in the foreground becomes a crucial element of the composition. It transforms the narrative from a personal journey into a broader reflection on the loss of innocence and the silent victims of violence.

The contrast between the spiritual symbol of the cross and the harsh reality of war creates a layered meaning, where faith, suffering and humanity intersect.

This painting is not a literal religious scene, but a metaphor for the burden carried by individuals in times of destruction – a burden that is both visible and deeply internal.
