EIN. MEER. VON. SAND. 2026.

snd-drft (EIN. MEER. VON. SAND.) is a real-time audiovisual program for MS-DOS that reads the Sand Drift Monument at Tibirke, Denmark.

The sandstone portal was raised in 1738 to mark the end of two centuries of drifting sand that had buried fields, streams and whole villages along the coast of North Zealand.

The monument carries inscriptions in Danish, German and Latin; the Latin face is now lost under moss. The program sounds the two surviving texts, alongside an English translation, letter by letter over a single fundamental, A2 (110 Hz).

Each letter becomes a harmonic partial, determined by its place in the alphabet modulo a value that drifts from 12 to 17 over 8 minutes 54 seconds, so the mapping from letter to pitch never holds still for long. Every letter read falls into a digital sea at the bottom of the screen.

snd-drft (EIN. MEER. VON. SAND.)  was written in APL and Pascal for 1990s hardware, in that sense three eighteenth-century inscriptions are read by a mid-nineties machine in languages few machines still run.

It was released on Pouët and Demozoo in September 2026 under the title snd-drft by chrntps.
