Anna Zacharzewska - Poland

The woman in the painting is not simply lying in the river—she is the river. She appears only in cold moonlight; in sunlight, she does not exist.

Her icebound, roughened body becomes the physical manifestation of pain. The dark, freezing water relentlessly drains her warmth and energy. Despite this “frozen” state, she remains painfully conscious and alive, her suffering unrelenting.

She dominates the surrounding landscape, captivating the viewer more than the river itself. To the beholder, she embodies a dark metaphor for enduring, relentless pain—teetering between collapse and quiet, hidden strength.
