Zen City 004

Kenji Ichikawa - Japan

This work from the Zen City series appears at first to depict a machine-like circuit board, but closer observation reveals a meticulous construction of botanical images. Created through my Pixel Montage technique, the composition is formed from hundreds of photographs taken in Tokyo’s botanical gardens. Layered greenery replicates the density and precision of electronic systems, while the overall arrangement reflects the spatial logic of hardware design.

The silver, disc-like forms recall capacitors or connectors, yet each is composed of natural textures that evoke dew, reflection, and organic presence. This interplay between mechanical illusion and botanical reality encourages a shifting perception: what seems engineered gradually reveals itself as living material.

The piece explores the structural parallels between natural growth and technological networks. The visual density suggests both a flourishing ecosystem and the flow of data within a complex machine. Rooted in the contemplative sensibility of Zen, Zen City 004 invites viewers to reflect on the connections that underlie all systems and to look beyond surface appearances toward the intricate relationships that sustain them.
