Remnant

Michiko Fukushima - Japan

This work is created using washi paper and traditional Japanese aizome indigo dye.
The work explores the tension between control and unpredictability through the interaction of material, stain, texture, and negative space.

Rather than treating the material as something to dominate, I work through a process of quiet negotiation with it.
The movement of the dye, the absorption of the washi paper, and the accidental traces that emerge beyond my intention become essential elements of the composition.

Within the restrained structure of the work, organic forms and subtle distortions appear as remnants of time, gesture, and presence.
The deep indigo unique to aizome has long existed in Japanese culture not only as a color, but as a material connected to stillness, spirituality, and human memory.

Through this work, I seek to create a silent space where materiality and impermanence can resonate beyond language.
