Inherited Gravity

Inherited Gravity is an interdisciplinary work combining sculpture, performance, costume and moving image. A female figure is suspended by an enlarged sculptural mass of hair, transforming an intimate element of the body into a structure that simultaneously holds and weighs upon it.

Hair, closely associated with identity and femininity, becomes an extension of the body and a physical presence that determines how the figure occupies space. The body is supported by the very structure that also becomes its weight.

Gravity therefore operates beyond its physical meaning. It becomes a metaphor for the invisible forces through which what came before us continues to shape the body and our sense of self.

The work explores the tension between what we receive before we are able to consciously choose and what we later shape for ourselves.

What happens when the force that holds us is also the force that weighs upon us?

Through the tension between body, hair and sculptural form, Inherited Gravity explores the unstable boundary between what we inherit and what we become.
