Uli: Yin

Robert Oniha - United States of America

Uli is an indigenous body and wall painting tradition of the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria. By the mid-20th century, colonial rule, christian influence, and western clothing standards led to its decline, leaving only fragments in murals and memory. Thankfully, in recent times, uli has risen in popularity thanks to writers like Paul Bash, artists like Chinyere Odinukwe, Emmanuel Item and so many others showing its resilience and the strength of Igbo traditions and their ability to evolve while keeping their culture alive. I used oil to paint the figure, paint, ankara to project her attire, and wool and artificial hair to make the hair.
