It’s true.  If there were no procrastinators in the world, I’d be out of work.  Thankfully, the world is full of procrastinators, and many of them are about to apply to college.

Coulda Woulda Shoulda

You know who you are.  You had every intention of working on your applications this summer.  But, hey, it’s summer!  Why not wait until school starts?  Just do the college apps and essays right along with the rest of the homework.  Piece of cake once you get back into the routine, right?

Maybe not.  But, don’t worry!  There’s a quick and easy way to get those college essays done!

Workshops to the Rescue

Los Alamitos Recreation & Community Services has added not one, but two evening workshops for the Common App essay, and the Los Alamitos Education Foundation will offer a Saturday morning workshop for the UC personal insight questions. Both workshops take place over only 5 class meetings.  Students will start brainstorming essay ideas on day one!  My goal is to send them home fully inspired and ready to write.  They will crank out their first draft at home (one page is all I ask!) and bring it for feedback on day two.

To Perfection and Beyond!

Feedback is such an important part of the writing process.  First, students will immediately know if they are on the right track.  Second, they will learn how and where to add details to make their story really come to life.  Some students will continue to fine tune a single essay over several drafts, until it reaches perfection.  Some will bring in a fresh draft on a new topic, until they discover which story works best.
