Butterfly Valley Dream

Butterfly Valley Dream is grounded in my Painting–Music Fusion system, in which musical pitches correspond to specific colors, allowing color to function simultaneously as pictorial material and musical note.

The work draws from a piece of music inspired by Butterfly Valley in Hualien, Taiwan. Rather than translating the entire composition, I selected only its final musical phrase. The notes of this phrase are transformed, through their chromatic correspondences, into colored butterflies moving across the canvas.

The butterflies retain the musical identity of color, while their scale, position, and distance are determined by pictorial space, composition, and visual atmosphere rather than by musical coding. A phrase that originally moves toward an ending becomes, in painting, a group of butterflies still in flight.

The work therefore begins with note becoming color, then moves further: melody becomes butterfly, and sound becomes dream.

When music reaches its end, can painting allow it to continue in another form?
