The Way Out

Joey Chung - Taiwan

The Way Out continues my artistic vocabulary — spontaneous line fused with a synthesis of Eastern and Western painting traditions.

Anchored in a monochromatic blue, I construct a body gesturing upward: part summons, part longing. Black ink lines crisscross the blue skin like fragments of the subconscious — unspoken emotions and latent collective images surfacing like phantoms across the canvas.

The figure is not a singular entity but an amalgamation of multiple faces. Interweaving, overlapping, pulling at one another — they form a body always in the process of becoming, never resolved.

This work is a meditation on struggle and transcendence. The individual searches for an exit amidst inner chaos and the gaze of the other — yet the exit is not beyond the frame, nor in the distance. It exists within the act of penetrating the mist, and the ceaseless, necessary work of recognising oneself.
