Raised in Silence

Teng Zhu Huang - Taiwan

<Raised in Silence>

This work reflects the silence shaped by family upbringing and Asian cultural expectations. From a young age, many people are taught to suppress their true thoughts and emotions in order to avoid conflict, embarrassment, or disappointing others.

The gagged figures symbolize individuals who gradually lose the ability to express themselves honestly. Over time, silence becomes a learned survival mechanism rather than a personal choice.

Through repetitive figures and restrained body language, the painting explores emotional suppression, obedience, and the invisible pressure of collective expectations.
