Taylor Hitson - United States of America

This work utilizes a repetitive 4 x 3 grid of hand-stamped irises to explore the intersection of biological unity and systemic surveillance. Each 10 cm x 10 cm tile is individually printed from a hand-carved linocut. This creates a tension between the organic, human origin of the image and the industrial, clinical nature of the grid. The tiles are grouted into a permanent wood mounting and encased in a layer of high-gloss resin. This choice of materials transforms the "window to the soul" into a permanent architectural fixture that is hardened, unblinking, and impossible to undo. The resin surface acts as both a protective lens and a barrier. It reflects the viewer’s own image back into the collective gaze and highlights the modern paradox of being a participant in a system that simultaneously monitors and alienates us. Medium: Hand-carved linocut on ceramic tile, acrylic, high-gloss resin, and grout on wood panel.
