Joey Chung is an independent Taiwanese contemporary artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He holds a Master's degree from the University of Arts London (2009) and is currently pursuing a PhD at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.

At the heart of his practice is "Automatic Drawing"—a process in which spontaneous, unpremeditated marks are made directly onto canvas, channelling subconscious impulses into visual form. Drawing on Carl Jung's concept of automatic writing, Chung relinquishes conscious control to allow emotions, memories, and psychological states to surface through intricate lines, symbolic imagery, and abstract forms. The resulting works are layered and dynamic, marked by overlapping shapes and fractal-like structures that continuously transform and merge.

Chung's paintings occupy a space between abstraction and personal mythology, where each visual element carries an emotional charge—evoking responses ranging from joy and desire to fear and melancholy. His material approach further reinforces this dialogue between interior and exterior worlds: by combining acrylic paint with traditional Chinese calligraphy ink, he brings together Eastern and Western mark-making traditions within a single visual field.

His practice raises questions central to contemporary art discourse—around authorship, the unconscious, and the boundaries between process and object. Automatic Drawing, for Chung, is not merely a technique but an ongoing investigation into self-knowledge and the limits of representation.
