Time Held in Color

Time Held in Color explores how musical time can be transformed into visual space.

In my Painting–Music Fusion practice, musical pitches are assigned chromatic identities: Do–red, Re–orange, Mi–yellow, Fa–green, Sol–blue, La–indigo, and Si–violet. As the music progresses, these colors unfold through changes of direction, interval, scale, spacing, and repetition, translating musical movement into pictorial structure.

Music exists through time: a note or phrase appears, resonates, and gives way to what follows. Painting changes this condition. On the canvas, moments that have already passed remain visible beside later ones, allowing an entire musical progression to be held within a single visual field.

The work moves beyond musical notation to explore whether painting can preserve the experience of duration itself—turning musical time into space, and listening into seeing.
