Rain-Night Flowers, Nocturne

June Tuan - Taiwan

Rain-Night Flowers, Nocturne explores how music can be transformed into color, pictorial space, and cultural memory.

Inspired by the Taiwanese folk song Rainy Night Flower, the painting draws on five pitches from the melody—Do, Re, Mi, Sol, and La. Within my Painting–Music Fusion system, these pitches correspond to red, orange, yellow, blue, and indigo. Color therefore carries a dual identity: it functions as both musical pitch and pictorial material.

These chromatic notes develop into flowers, traces of rain, and visual rhythm. Variations in repetition, spacing, density, and vertical movement translate musical structure into atmosphere and emotional resonance. The melody remains present through color while gradually expanding into a pictorial world.

For me, Rainy Night Flower also carries Taiwan’s collective cultural memory. As the song enters painting, notes become color, color becomes pictorial space, music becomes memory, and memory reconnects with place and culture.

The melody may fade, but cultural memory continues through color.
