Puppet

Zhaorui Chen - China

The installation combines a suspended sneaker, a wooden frame, a photograph, and

extended shoelaces. The photograph depicts a human figure controlled by the shoelaces

connected to the sneaker above, just like a puppet. Viewers can physically interact with

the loops on the ground.

Puppet shows the shifting relationship between consumers and the objects they desire.

Turning the sneaker into a puppeteer, the work reverses the common assumption that

humans possess and control commodities. The extended shoelaces create a physical

connection between object and body, suggesting how desire, branding, and emotional

attachment can influence personal choices and identity. The work questions whether

consumption represents ownership, or whether objects can begin to shape the people

who pursue them.
