Via Dolorosa di Gaza

“Via Dolorosa di Gaza” is a symbolic and deeply human reflection on suffering, displacement and the spiritual dimension of contemporary conflict. The solitary figure carrying a wooden cross through the ruins of a devastated city becomes a universal metaphor for human endurance, sacrifice and the burden of collective tragedy.

Rather than referring to a single religious narrative, the painting transforms the archetype of the Via Dolorosa into a contemporary visual testimony about war, destruction and the fragile condition of humanity. The ruined urban landscape evokes the collapse of civilization, while the distant light emerging on the horizon introduces a subtle dimension of hope, transcendence and moral reflection.

The work combines expressive realism with symbolic and metaphysical elements characteristic of Dariusz Witold Mierzwa’s artistic language. Through dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, layered textures and cinematic spatial composition, the painting creates an atmosphere of silence, loneliness and existential tension.

“Via Dolorosa di Gaza” was nominated for the Artista d’Europa Award 2025 in Venice and was presented during the international contemporary art exhibition at the historic Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista in December 2025. The work attracted attention for its emotional intensity and symbolic commentary on contemporary humanitarian crises and the human cost of war.

Created using mixed media techniques, the painting combines material painting with symbolic figurative narration characteristic of Dariusz Witold Mierzwa’s artistic practice.
