Schön.

Nemanja Popadic - Austria

“Schön.” is a multi-channel video installation composed of twelve parallel projections— each showing only the hands of an individual engaged in continuous, synchronized applause. The number twelve echoes both the structure of judgment (a jury of twelve) and spiritual symbolism (the twelve disciples), situating the act of applause in a liminal space between authority and faith.

Layered with a dense soundscape—from mundane urban noises and social media notifications to ominous alarms of imminent airstrikes—the work interrogates how the ubiquitous gesture of clapping becomes a hollow ritual in an age dominated by spectacle. Drawing from Guy Debord’s critique of modern society, the piece examines how the constant oversaturation of content through social media alienates and anesthetizes us, blurring the boundaries between urgency and triviality. In this perpetual stream, applause becomes indistinguishable from alarm, celebration from catastrophe. We are rendered passive—unable to discern or respond meaningfully—because everything begins to feel the same: one continuous, numbing spectacle.
