Luisa

Kseniia Levoshko - Ukraine

Luisa is a portrait built against absence. The black ground gives the figure no environment, no story external to herself, she has to hold her own presence. The hand pressed to her face reads ambiguously: protection, exhaustion, a refusal to be looked at frontally. Skin is constructed entirely in cyan and magenta with no naturalistic flesh tone, pushing the portrait away from likeness toward a charged, almost luminous surface. The yellow hoops and red headband are the only points of stable colour,  small assertions of self against a ground that resists her. The work belongs to a continuing series on Black female presence, gesture as defence, and the cost of visibility.
