A Garden I Remember, A Garden That Never Existed

Yaxuan Li - China

The artwork A Garden I Remember, A Garden That Never Existed repeatedly recalls and reconstructs a garden, interpreting winter as a season of repetition, memory and silent renewal. Against a greyish-white background, vibrant flowers and imagined plant forms create a space where warmth persists even after the flowering season has ended. Repetitive shapes and textured layers of paint evoke a quiet, contemplative ritual: revisiting colour, recalling growth, and reorganising fragments of sensory memory. In this process, a garden that may never have truly existed becomes an emotional space to which one can continually return. For the artist Yaxuan, winter is not merely a period of natural dormancy, but also a moment when one returns to familiar actions, images and memories. Painting thus becomes a ritual: a continuous revisiting and reorganisation of these fragments. The garden becomes an emotional space situated between observation and imagination, whilst the rhythm of painting preserves traces of vitality during this relatively tranquil season of the year.
