Kozmo 108

Michele Segalerba - Italy

The ground is a pale, cracked texture paste, somewhere between old plaster and dry earth. Two sets of concentric rings sit on it. The larger one, on the left, runs through sand and taupe and narrows to a small white point at its centre. From that point a wedge opens diagonally across the canvas, and wherever it passes the rings turn red: a bright outer band, a near-black ring, bright red again at the core. Outside the wedge the second circle keeps the same neutral tones as the first. Gold leaf fills the upper corner above the diagonal.

The structure follows the Lurianic model of circles and the straight line: contracted space, and a single ray that enters it and carries light. The white point is the nekudà she-balev, the point in the heart from which the process starts. Red marks gevurà, the limit and the capacity to receive. The gold stands outside the rings, unbounded, and the cracks underneath are the vessels that have already broken.
