The Sorrow of Life II

Bin Xu - China

The Sorrow of Life began after I lost a loved one. What stayed with me is
the oldest fact we share: life flows away from its very beginning.

In The Sorrow of Life II, the great vessel-like form at the centre is an
eye. It holds the world it has seen and weeps red tears over the crowd,
while a small figure sits upon it, meditating. The leaves have already left
their branches: they gather into a whirlpool, the whirlpool holds up a
shell, and on that shell a new life is standing, with birds singing around
it. A skull surfaces at the crowd's feet.

In thick, layered oil paint, birth and death share the same ground, each
one holding the other up.

This is the second panel of a four-part series. Death is not despair.
Sometimes it is a release — and perhaps it holds a hope of its own.
