I can save them.

Penny Arvin - United States of America

This piece represents the savior complex I personify when hyper fixating on people. It uses a pop culture icon as a vessel, twisting and contorting it to absurdity. It invokes a sense of self-deification and pageantry, where the hero conjures these fantastical heroic personas in order to keep others in its life. It dedicates itself to a self-serving guise of benevolence, which is illustrated by the dagger through the throat. The heroic caricature is seen emitting a psychic explosion. The red, white, and yellow elements pictured indicate a hierarchy of vulnerability secreted in blood, semen, and urine. A decaying background suggests a lost cause. The combined presence of these elements present our figure as someone with complete, utter disregard for social norms, leading us to question their moral legitimacy. The webs shooting out from the mask demonstrates how much they’re willing to sacrifice for this “righteous cause”. Note the exaggeration on the eye of the mask, depicting an act of shape shifting. “I can save them” portrays an emotional leech clutching to immateriality in a desperate attempt to save itself.
