Hope

Anna Lasik - Poland

My works frequently feature a mask motif. It is a reference to the desire to disguise what we
want to conceal from others - our fears, our fragility, facial expressions that give away our
reactions to situations or persons. I am interested in the theme of carnival, commedia
dell’arte, the Orient, but also the matters involving politics, religion, or hues of variety of
landscapes.
I combine a variety of media and techniques: traditional weaving, painting, assemblage. I
encourage a discussion on various matters concerning the natural environment, emotions in
both direct and indirect manner. My goal is to trigger imagination, and I welcome occasional
subject ambiguity, leaving an opportunity for anyone to stumble upon a part of themselves.
I enjoy experimenting with materials, I utilize fragments of used clothes, styrofoam, fabrics
leftovers. I sew both by hand and with a sewing machine. My work includes tufting,
experimenting with both 2D and 3D, emotions, sensory and tactile experience, internal
structure.
The work Hope is one of three works from the Masks series. It is an image composed of light colors - white and shades of blue. The mask symbolizes the emotions of a person who dreams of a better life, a better version of himself, a better tomorrow.
