I am a fiber installation artist and a textile designer living in Brooklyn, New York. I was born in 1982 in Seoul, South Korea. I recently graduated with a M.F.A in Fiber Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2013. My B.F.A in Fiber Art was received from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2010 and B.S in Clothing Science(Fashion Design) was received from Seoul Women’s University in 2006. My line work started from the geometric and abstract patterns which are inspired from the lines of Korean alphabet, 'Han-geul' at first. Because of Han-geul's geometric and modern patterns with vertical lines, horizontal lines, squares, triangles, and circles, it has strong potential as a design instrument. For example, it contains. ㄱ,ㄴ,ㄷ,ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅇ,ㅈ,ㅊ,ㅋ,ㅍ,ㅌ,ㅎ(consonant sound-14), ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ,ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ,ㅡ, ㅣ(vowel sound-10). Since I came to Cranbrook Academy of Art, my two-dimensional work on fabric has developed to the installation work in the wide space and architecture in scale. In the spaces that give great inspiration to me, I represented the inspiration as an abstract pattern. An interest in the pattern was moved deeper into an interest in the line, further I focused on the “point” comprising the line. As a result, I attempted the work starting from the points. While working with space, I began to use the lines as a way to decompose the space, and applied to common objects such acts to deconstruct. After making the object returning to the pure material, I became interested in working to re-birth as new shape with them. My deconstruction work has undergone abstraction process through semi abstraction. Through the process, the two-dimensional works changed to the three-dimensional works, and three-dimensional works reversely changed to the two-dimensional one. I explore original pure feeling of the form through the lines as the intervention, space, layers, light, and shadow. I try to create negative volume by using the achromatic lines, represent the space by using division and proportion, and make the shape and contour.
