Gauri Gandhi
Gauri Gandhi was born in 1956 inAmritsar,Punjab. She completed her BFA with distinction (1979) and MFA in sculpture from MSU (Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda) in 1982.
Selected to participant in ‘22 National Art exhibition, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi1982’, ‘22 State Art Exhibition, Gujrat state Lalit Kala Academy, Ahmedabad 1982’ and ‘All India Art Exhibition AIFACS, by All India Fine Arts and Craft Society, New Delhi 1982’.
She joined Garhi studios, Lalit kala academy New Delhi, where she worked in metal beating and printmaking. It was in Bhopal that she joined Bharat Bhawan, exploring and experimenting in ceramics. Seizing the opportunity of doing advanced ceramics studies with Mrs. Nirmala Patwardhan in Pune (1997), she established her own studio in Pune 2001.
To her credit are few landmark shows, solo show with Bilmat Zeramicz, Earth for Animals at the Hungarian cultural Centre, PFA, Menka Gandhi, New Delhi. 101 Potters of India by The Delhi blue pottery trust and ‘Jiyo Hajaro Sal’ Curated by Sanjiv Singhal, a group show for MF Hussain’s 88th birthday, Pune. ‘Pune Artistic expressions, the opening show at Vaishwik Art Gallery, Pune and many more.
Taking a break from freelancing and undertaking commercial orders, Gauri Joined FLAME University, liberal education in 2008, teaching Sculpture.
Teaching sculpture in a liberal education University, she made time to revisit her art practice. she continued to exhibit and curate within Pune city.
‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, an installation created under the theme ‘Heritage’ was part of ‘Pune Biennale 2015’. .
In 2017 Gauri curated ‘Merawalla Blue’ for Pune Biennale 2017, presenting artists of Art Mandai. ‘My ego blues’ was her installation.
‘Mask’ was a collaborative mega project by IGA and Mona Lisa Kalagram in collaboration, same year, 2017. Her installation. ‘Janoon’ an exhibition curated by gallery Monalisa Kalagram, Pune, 2017 presented Gauri’s papier Mache figurines titled ‘I M CONNECTED’ presenting todays obsession of newfound connecting gadgets ‘mobile phones’.
2018 Samavad, a group show initiated by ‘Kala Gajar’ at Raja Ravi Verma Gallery, in collaboration with PEN, Pune.
As a teacher of Fine arts, she took few initiatives to connect art with masses.
2016, she initiated ‘Art Mandai’ an ongoing annual event with the purpose of connecting art with the local public. Every 26th January, Pune artists sell art at affordable prices, sitting amongst the vegetable vendors in the ancient heritage building, ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai.
2017, Gauri designed and curated ‘Art-tete-a-tete’ for FLAME University. On the campus of FLAME liberal education, where diverse disciplines, from science to social, humanities to creative, finances to communication thrive together, interacting at all levels, the event was a collaborative art festival, featuring eminent Pune Artists and FLAME Faculty members.
2018, she initiated and established ‘FLAME Artist’s Residency’. It has become one of the important annual events of the university.
2023 solo show ‘Fleeting encounters’ at Sudarshan kaladana, Pune.
Part of the group show ‘Unveiled Horizons’ at VHC gallery, Pune, Gauri her ceramic heads.
