My practice so far has explored the aspects of how abstraction can convey the relationship between the universal and personal experience, in particular developing my own personal language that has a set of differential marks, values and colours. These qualities of difference impart sensations and associations and become sites of interaction between the logical and the emotional, of the sensory and perception.

In my current body of work there is a shift between oppositions and how these relate formally to the way object and space can be integrated in two and three dimensions. As a result these works shift between a scale of abstraction and representation. As the paintings move from the two dimensional mode into a more three dimensional one these works change their focus to relate the experience of painting to the viewer.

This series developed from an installation project that sought to extend my painting practice into other materials. This involved creating painted paper pieces and cutting them to create multiple planar forms, when arranged them resemble large loose shaped knots.  By cropping and expanding the original documentation, I could explore the effects of size and scale back into the painted form.  Once transformed, the works retain not only the effects of the process and but its inherent materiality.   My interest in creating and solving formal problems has now extended into using more three dimensional forms and representational means.

Julia graduated with a Master of Arts in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW in 2010. She has exhibited extensively in that time at art spaces, such as Gosford Regional Gallery, Factory 49 and SNO Contemporary projects. She has been awarded studio residencies at Waverly Artist Studios, A.R.P Studios and Culture at Work Emerging Artist Residency program, as well as being Finalist in the Mosman Art Prize, and the Fischer’s Ghost.
