During the last 10 years in Madrid, I have worked on developing a sculptural language that intentionally moves away from my figurative roots, reflecting not the appearance of something, but the experience itself related to the aftereffects of trauma that so many carry within themselves. The results are abstract, slightly larger than ourselves and intimate in nature. I choose simple, basic materials; a more elemental, expressive handling of those materials; a restrained use of color, a focused form of lighting.

I search for forms that speak for themselves, retain their own voice, and resonate a presence that often feels animated within them. I strive for these affects because I believe many viewers respond to intimacy, the singularity of a piece and the silent presence these works emit.
I believe that these pieces enter the consciousness of visitors in a subliminal fashion, well before thought.

Drawing is another part of my ongoing work. While not directly related to traumatic issues, it instead allows a conversation with my own subconscious world. The most recent explore the troubling and solitary experience of our long confinement amidst the viral crisis. They are drawn with soft graphite pencils, various erasers, later adding pastel. The materials I use here are equally simple as with my sculpture.

I largely do not plan, instead I begin without preplanning to be able to uncover forms and meaning that I then pursue. Of course, because I work repeatedly with these materials, the dialogue between them and myself continues to deepen.
