ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am an Architect-Town Planner by qualification. In the early days of my career, I worked in Government organizations and then in a private partnership with my husband. My interest in Art led to Architecture and understanding Art became easier with Architecture. For me Art and Architecture go hand in hand. I am incomplete without either. Both give the joy of creation. However, in painting I connect with my innermost self. Painting happens in the most free state of mind. I am not bound by any expectations; there are no restrictions, no limitations. In my paintings, I am constantly in dialogue with the idea of changing scenarios of space- from enclosed spaces to landscape, seascape, cityscape to mindscape. There are impressions from life that are buried and layered deep in the psychological space of mind which I bring forth in my paintings, thus evolving a story or a thought or simply a painting. There is a certain narrative, but a lot is left for the viewer to imagine.  My paintings range from purely colourful simple compositions (to be enjoyed for the basic composition and colourful rendering of objects), to the depiction of intriguing happenings in the society. I am a firm believer in the idea that ‘a painting has a right to exist by itself as a painting’. My paintings happen in layers after layers.

Belief in my work got stronger with winning an award at AIFACS in 2009. I had a solo show ‘Beyond Borders’ at India Habitat Centre in 2012. Since then there has been no looking back. I have participated in many group shows and my work has been selected and displayed at annual art exhibitions at institutions such as Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Kala Parishad, NDMC , AIFACS, Bombay Art Society and the Art  society of India.
