My path

I took my first steps into the world of art with the figurative. However, I came to the point where I felt that this technique was not able to fully express my feelings and emotions. Then so I devoted myself to monochrome then for several years.

However, only the discovery of décollage made me realize that this technique is the best way to reconcile my artistic expression with my passion for graphic design.

Initially I added the collage to the monochrome, but the result did not satisfy me and I wanted to continue to seek a deeper and more rewarding technique to express myself.

I realized that I had nothing more to give to the painting as such, and I decided to adopt a different technique. It all began by chance by sending postcards, taking the pieces of my everyday life ( from newspapers , magazines, photo and posters) and putting them together to create a composition that would represent my thinking at that time and in that place.

A logbook

I always had the good fortune to travel a lot and this has allowed me to collect posters and various materials that I find on the streets, such as billboards, or on the premises. All this has become a sort of diary. Each painting represents for me a page of this diary because it speaks of me, tells of me in Italy, Berlin, Paris, Casablanca, London, Miami, Chicago, Stockholm and other cities. It tells of my emotions, my thoughts, my feelings.

The technique

This technique, called décollage, describes the process as opposed to collage. Instead of adding elements to the work, we start from an art object from which the parts are detached.

I use city posters that summarize a folk art (the poster), and urban art.

They offer me a palette of colors, graphics and color areas that allow me to compose an image that gives me emotions.

It is a technique that has been developed in the ’50 and ’60 that still gives me the tool to express my deepest soul.

Press release:

“Building works in a deconstructive collage of magazines and posters gathered on his travels, Rudy Bortolini’s technique of décollage is graphically bold and rough, as he energetically tears and manipulates his imagery to give it a life of its own through his vivid use of media. Faces, text, and color are fractured, shifted, layered and obscured with an ephemeral spontaneity, suggesting hidden emotional memories.

A painter for many years, Bortolini abandoned the medium in favor of the fresh energy and expression of décollage. Born in Treviso, Italy, he now divides his time between Stockholm, Sweden and Italy.”
