BIBLIOGRAPHY
…at different phases 2004
Suresh’s abstracts are thought provoking in their distinct forms, colours and shapes. A complexity underscores all his canvases painstakingly worked out in terms of simulated and real textures. He has skillfully juxtaposed the real and the painted to trick the eye, inviting a closer inspection of his works. Suresh has
Deployed the idea of a collage but translated it into paint, marking them with calculated geometry and growing organic forms. His canvases vibrate with vitality bound together with strong defining black lines. - Ashrafi.S. Bhagat.
The Hindu, Chennai, September27, 2004
Suresh Kumar make clever use of varied materials and objects in their mixed- media abstracts.
- Lakshmi Venkatraman.
…at different phases 2005
Suresh’s canvases have a pathological character, particularly in their texture and details. - Ashrafi.S. Bhagat. The Hindu,Chennai,October27,2005
Sureshkumar has skillfully juxtaposed the real and surreal in an aesthetic manner. The artists have used some colours effectively to capture various moods. - Liani Tlau ,City express, Chennai, October27, 2005
Kinetics 2007
The neo-installational works, in mixed media, by S.Suresh Kumar, call attention to the emotional quotient they are invested with. A paper-cup still, with a dump bin below, marks for him a vital ‘duration’ between usefulness and redundancy, between consumption and waste. For him, it signifies his social position. Equally self-referential is the sole balloon, precariously surviving in the target-shooting frame, which signifies to him his own ephemeral condition. The post-box becomes a metaphor for the positives and negatives he receives form the society around him and, thus, a shadowy window to the increments in his growth. He says, “I give lot of importance to the ‘shadow’ in my work because it is a meter of my feelings. The shadow is my presence in my work.” - Sadanand Menon
KINETICS TRACING NEW HORIZONS 2009
Another artist who responds to his immediate surroundings is and strives to
Transfer his physical and emotional experiences on to his artworks is
S Suresh Kumar (b.1982 / MFA 2006). In his earlier works, he would ingeniously employ Objects like disposable cups and dustbin (to signal the 'use and throw' culture), balloons (as targets for shooting games),and closed envelops to highlight individual’s fragile relationships with society; there was also an underlying current indicating the steady depletion of moral and ethical values all around. Suresh’s current works embrace more optimistic symbols and colours be they the changing traffic signal lights or the intriguingly arranged ‘diamond’ blocks; these clearly point to unfolding of new opportunities and openness to affirmative directions and actions
An inspirational exhibition showcasing eight talented Chennai based artist recently concluded at the Chitrakala Parishad. Kinetics as the group is called had their first exhibition in Bangalore in 2009. The common thread binding them together is the fact that all of them are from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai and presently share a common workplace at the Lalit Kala Academy studios. In accord to the name of the group each had a work which reflects the sense of movement. This inadvertent discovery adds yet another dimension to their fascinating works. The different dimensions of the movement captured or rather experienced by the viewer is invigorating. - Giridhar Khasnis
S.Suresh Kumar’s work instantly reminds one of optical art in which geometrical images are placed in such away that they appear to move, or in this case create movement. The alternating yellow and black squares in Focusappear to diverge and converge giving the illusion of motion. This motion is further heightened by the blue background. While an inward and outward movement is seen in S.Suresh’s work Sunil Kumar Shree’s Momentum enunciates vertical movement. The abacus way of arranging the wooden blocks and tilting them at angles creates the notion of movement which is heightened by the lines drawn on these white blocks. - Tejshvi Jain
Eight male artists from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, collective known as Kinetics, project unconventional canvasses and unique ideas in their exhibition. Suresh Kumar S. creates a mirage of vinyl on acrylic sheet that blind and tease your eyes by its dancing geometric shapes. - Ayesha Matthan
