Betrayal and Denial - triptych

BETRAYAL AND DENIAL

Triptych – consisting of 3 drawings

Medium:  Charcoal drawings on Fabriano Academia paper

Dimensions:  150 cm x 230 cm each

Date: 30- 09-2013

This triptych consists out of three self-portraits and can be regarded as psychological and spiritual reflections of the self .

These drawings can be regarded as a study of dualism within human nature and the concept of personal transformation - an investigation of the liminal process of moving from one “condition” to another “condition”.  In these artworks notions related to fragility and instability of human nature are explored.   The core idea of “betrayal” and subsequent “denial” on which these drawings are based are directly brought into context with the proverb which reads as follow:  “Speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil” - evoking associations with the ironic elements within human nature.

Concluding, these drawings could be regarded as reflections of the self through association with the character of the other. The use of drawing trace and the material itself are explored in an experimental and symbolic manner as a carrier of meaning whereby it functions as a visual language, at the bottom half of these drawings becoming reminiscent of “sound waves”.
