Describing our Memories

Yannick Tossing - Luxembourg

“Describing Our Memories” is part of my ongoing exploration of how fragile and difficult it can be to communicate our memories to others. Using multilayered collages of analogue photo prints, the artwork reflects the way personal memories shift, overlap, and sometimes disappear.

My experience with my father’s Huntington disease deeply shapes this research. I witnessed how his memories slowly blurred, mixed together, or vanished, making even simple recollections complex and hard to express. This artwork translates that struggle into visual form.

The white cut-out silhouettes represent missing information, the gaps that appear when we try to describe something we no longer fully grasp. Behind them, fragments of photographs, light leaks, and analogue imperfections create a layered landscape of competing images, much like the inner process of remembering.

“Describing Our Memories” captures the uncertainty, distortion, and beauty of memory itself. It shows how, even when we try our best, no two people ever see the same past in the same way.
